It’s a boy for Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg and his fiance Rhea Durham welcomed their third child last Tuesday, a son - whose name they will not release! The couple already have two other children together, a daughter, Ella, 4, and a son, Michael, 2.

Mark has only recently proposed to his longtime girlfriend and the mother of his children however. From an interview he gave recently it seems like Mark was not sure of the relationship until recently because he stated, “We continue to grow in our relationship, and we have a much better chance of succeeding and staying together now.” He says that he is now committed to making it work.

Congrats to the whole family!

Social Networking for Babies

Call it convenient. Call it baby overshare. But a host of new sites, including Totspot, Odadeo, Lil’Grams and Kidmondo, now offer parents a chance to forgo the e-mail blasts of, say, their newborn’s first trip home and instead invite friends and family to join and contribute to a network geared to connecting them to the baby in their lives.

“It’s an interesting model,” said Amanda Lenhart, a senior research specialist for the Pew Internet & American Life Project. “Everyone can decide how much or little they want to know about a baby, which avoids the situation of receiving a few too many e-mails about someone’s wonderful child, and parents can decide how much they want to share — in minimal or maximal ways.”

But does the world really need online social networking for babies?

Minn. Baby Born 8/8/08 At 8:08; 8 Pounds, 8 Ounces

Hailey Jo Hauer was born on the eighth day of the eighth month in 2008 at 8:08 a.m. So it wouldn't make sense for her to weigh anything other than 8 pounds, 8 ounces.

Lindsey Hauer thought staff at Lake Region Hospital in Minnesota were joking when they told her the time of her daughter's birth. Then she got a call from the birthing suite noting Hailey's weight.

Nurse Jenny Harstad joked that she tried to shrink the baby to 18 inches from her actual 19.5 inches.

Several hospital staff members pledged to buy lottery tickets.

Drinking water can be harmful to smallest babies

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Babies younger than six months old should never be given water to drink, physicians at Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore remind parents. Consuming too much water can put babies at risk of a potentially life-threatening condition known as water intoxication.

"Even when they're very tiny, they have an intact thirst reflex or a drive to drink," Dr. Jennifer Anders, a pediatric emergency physician at the center, told Reuters Health. "When they have that thirst and they want to drink, the fluid they need to drink more of is their breast milk or formula."

Pair Ring in '08 at Maternity Ward Again

Central Pennsylvania couple has a new tradition for ringing in the new year: spending it in the maternity ward. For the second year in a row, Kyle and Becky Armstrong welcomed the first baby of the year at Gettysburg Hospital.

Faith Lynn Armstrong arrived on New Year's Day at 5:23 a.m. Her brother, Kaden Skye, was the hospital's first baby in 2007 — also born on Jan. 1.

Nurse manager Laura Swomley said she'd never seen anything like it in 25 years at the hospital.

"It's strange," agreed Becky Armstrong, of Gettysburg. "It's all very weird."

Armstrong said it wasn't anything she and her husband had planned.

"Faith being a first baby was not on my mind," said Armstrong. "It didn't matter to me."

Clinton talks about $5,000 for every baby

Whether you're a fan of the Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, or not, she is proposing an idea that every US child should get a $5,000 "baby bond." This would be given from the government to help pay for future costs of college or even purchasing a new home. Hilary mentioned this during a forum hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus where she says:

"I like the idea of giving every baby born in America a $5,000 account that will grow over time, so that when that young person turns 18 if they have finished high school they will be able to access it to go to college or maybe they will be able to make that downpayment on their first home."
Clinton didn't go into further detail about the estimate of the total cost of the program nor did she say how it will be paid for. But just think about it.... approximately 4 million babies are born each YEAR in the US! She goes on to say that this program would help Americans get back to the tradition of savings, since it has become so difficult to accomplish with rising college fees and housing costs. She said that wealthy kids:
"Get to have all kinds of tax incentives to save, but most people can't afford to do that."
People agreed with her:
"I think it's a wonderful idea," said Rep. Stephanie Stubbs Jones, an Ohio Democrat who attended the event and has already endorsed Clinton. "Every child born in the United States today owes $27,000 on the national debt, why not let them come get $5,000 to grow until their 18?"
According to information from the Associated Press:
Britain launched a similar program in January 2005, handing out vouchers worth hundreds of dollars each to parents with children born after Sept. 1, 2002. Earlier this month, Time magazine proposed a $5,000 baby bond program.
If it is done right this could work out wonderfully! But I can also just imagine certain families taking this as an opportunity to make money by making babies! ... that is the negative, but maybe, realistic side talking... What do you think? Do you agree with Hillary?

Russian woman's 12th baby weighs in at 17.1 lb (7.75 kg)

Can you imagine? A Siberian woman gave birth to her 12th child, Nadia. Not only was Nadia number twelve, but she weighed in at an astonishing 17.1 lbs. (7.75 kg)! Wow! Baby Nadia weighs more than 'Super Tonio' who was born in Mexico last February and weighed in at 14.5 lbs! Little baby Nadia was delivered by c-section on September 17, joining eight sisters and three brothers.

"We were all simply in shock," said Nadia's mother, Tatyana Barabanova, 43. "What did the father say? He couldn't say a thing -- he just stood there blinking." "I ate everything, we don't have the money for special foods so I just ate potatoes, noodles and tomatoes," she told the reporter, adding that all her previous babies had weighed more than 5 kg.
According to the Guinness World Records:
The records lists a 10.2 kg baby boy born in Italy in 1955, and a 10.8 kg baby boy who was born in the United States in 1879 but died 11 hours later.
In case you were wondering, according to World Health Organization's figures, the weight for most healthy newborns is around 7.06 lbs. (3.2 kg). source

An American Idol Audition Can Put a Woman in Labor!

A woman waiting for 16 hours in line to become part of reality TV stardom that is American Idol came to a halt when she went into labor. Antoria Gillon, 20, of Dallas, wasn't expected to give birth until today, but that wasn't the case. She felt alright waiting outside the Texas Stadium on Monday, not expecting to go into labor.

"I felt something over my body when I was walking," she said in a telephone interview from her hospital bed Wednesday after giving birth to a healthy boy — her second — Tuesday morning.

"I knew right away what it was. I was singing, and the judge stopped and asked if I was OK, and I said, 'I just want to finish my song.' "

It was hip-hop trio 702's Get It Together, which aptly enough includes the lyrics, "I don't really wanna stay/I don't really wanna go."

"I said, 'Well, I haven't gotten my golden ticket yet,' " which would signal she made it to the next round.

Enduring intense contractions, she finished singing, got the familiar sheet of paper and only then climbed in.

Were producers swayed by her perseverance?

Gillon believes she made it to the second round with her vocal skills but admits, "They go by character and motivation, and I think I showed more than enough motivation."

The baby's name: Jamil Labarron Idol McCowan. "I just felt like it was more than appropriate," she says.

Ha-ha! I'm glad her and the baby are doing great. That is so funny. Antoria is awesome!!! source

"Baby Einstein" May Hinder Baby Development

I have to admit that I am guilty of purchasing Baby Einstein products for my little one. Of course you want get the best for your child, especially if it helps your baby's development. I kinda feel stupid after reading the news that came out today. Researchers are saying that babies who spend at least an hour a day with Baby Einstein DVDs and Videos understand around six to eight fewer words than the babies who are not watching them!

"The most important fact to come from this study is there is no clear evidence of a benefit coming from baby DVDs and videos, and there is some suggestion of harm," says Associate Professor Frederick Zimmerman of the University of Washington and colleagues.
"The bottom line is the more a child watches baby DVDs and videos, the bigger the effect. The amount of viewing does matter."
To read more about how they conducted the research click here.
