Make ice cream from breast milk, says PETA

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has urged US ice cream makers Ben & Jerry's Homemade to replace cow's milk in ice cream products with breast milk. "PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 per cent of the cow's milk in the food he serves," the animal rights group said.

PETA officials say a move to breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their calves on factory farms and benefit human health.

"The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," PETA spokeswoman Tracy Reiman said.

"Everyone knows that the breast is best, so, Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favour by making the switch to breast milk."

Ben & Jerry's said: "We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child."

wow, just wow. i was hoping someone else had commented on this. it certainly brings to light the sad state of using animals to make ice cream rather than humans, the image of a booby farm is rather disturbing.

I find it an interesting idea. Women who wish to could earn income, while ensuring that cows make milk for their babies rather than for humans.

Anonymous said...

Just think, a whole new industry opens up for women who wish to could earn income from this. Not to mention that cows could then be free from over milking to make something that humans can do without anyway.

OH GIVE ME A BREAK! I am sorry, but since when is milking a cow cruel? It amazes me that in this worl we live in a woman has the right to kill her unborn baby, and PETA is protesting about milking cows? How about we save the humans! Not the cows milk!

The thought of this makes me never want to eat ice cream again. Actually I might not eat anything ever again. Get real.

God, PETA is insane. I mean it's a great cause to want ethical treatment towards animals, but why would we use breast milk for ice cream when there are preemies sitting in the hospital with underdeveloped lungs drinking formula..If breastfeeding mothers donate to anyone it should be to benefit a human childs life. Sorry, but that's crazy.

PETA! what about People for the Ethical Treatment of People. I think I'll start that organization. Being a mom who just finished breast feeding - and pumping - I can't imagine what it would take to acquire enough human milk to accomplish such a feat. PETA should go back to worrying about fur and leave mommies boobies alone! Way to go Ben and Jerry's for your very tactful response.

ummm... I am not sure what to say....I do not eat any meat but I think that I would definatley not eat ice cream ever again if it was made with breast milk! Sorry PETA but thats just weird

wow, just wow starts off a comment for this post perfectly! sooo, it's ok for us to not take away from baby cows milk, but it's ok to take away from human baby's milk? Breast milk is good for babies but does not make that much different for adults. Adults get their nutrients from other foods, so we would be wasting it I think. Are you going to feed your babies ice cream? There are so many women that can't breast feed that would love to have more options to receive that same milk for their babies.

Oh My God....Our economy is in the dumps, companies are shutting down, no one knows what the future holds for us Americans let alone humans in the next few decades BUT we have solved the issue of the Proper way to make ice cream!!!! Give me a break. Kudos to B&J for such a diplomatic response (I would not have been so kind)

This is quite ridiculous. I agree with the Ben and Jerry comment. Excess breastmilk would be better used in NICUs.

eeeuuwwww the idea of eating ice cream that has been manufactured from human breast milk is soo gross, it would put me off for life

What a load of rubbish! I have no intention of consuming anything made from another woman's breast milk! Have you gone mad? I have no issues with drinking cow's milk. I think you are rather disturbing!

I commend PETA for protecting animals but the thought of having a strangers breastmilk in anything i consume is rather disturbing. This world is full of diseases and virus'. Wouldnt this be a huge health risk to our nation. PETA needs to larn when enough is enough. Sometimes they go completely overboard

wow, I wouldnt know how to take this, great idea (then baby's could safely have icecream as well.) It would be however a little strange eating icecream knowing its from another person. Healty yes, but one day it may be the norm.

Doesn't anyone at PETA know how hard it is to pump milk? And wouldn't it be better, if lactating women were going to "harvest" milk for anyone other than their own babies, to donate it to a milk bank for other babies who need it? I know PETA likes to push the limits, but this is a little unimaginable. I wish they'd put their efforts toward creating milk banks for human babies.

That is just ridiculous...are they serious? I like animals as much as the next person and certainly do not condone the inhumane treatment of animals, but some of these bitter PETA people seem to care more for the rights of an animal over a humans. I have always wondered if these gungho animal rights people focused their efforts on human rights and suffering...oh the things that they could accomplish. Which is more important...a suffering human or a chicken that is being slaughtered inhumanely...I mean really, come on!

When I heard about this, I thought PETA had lost their minds...they have. I feel that there is just something very wrong with that idea. Maybe give another mother's milk to an in-need infant, but not the public. (gag)

I am a little concerned about how they will test the breast milk before they use it? so many chemicals a woman puts in her body, on her body and diseases she carries can be passed thru breast milk. Also, is anyone else having a hard time with the thought of digesting someone elses breastmilk???? not sure if I could handle it......call me boob-a-phobic

ingrid said...

Really? The pregnancy blog put up a link to this? The only thing that this article brings to light is the fact that PETA members are dumb. I say drink milk, eat meat, and continue to cheer on dairy made ice cream.

Anonymous said...

Does PETA have nothing better to do? Dairy cows are bred and designed to produce milk for consumption. They do not suffer from being milked any more than an nursing mother does by pumping milk. We all know how badly engorgement hurts, imagine having gallons instead of ounces...

As a nursing mother I would not sell my milk for consumption, won't this just get needy mothers to feed their children formula because their milk is worth more to sell?

The only benefit would be that most people would not be intollerant to the milk.

Anonymous said...

It sad that breast milk can be purchased but hospitals are begging people to donate breast milk to save premature baby. Breast milk should be used first to save the babys who need it and if the amount is enough then you can worry about the cows. To me there is a more pressing issue than cows who are going to be used for their milk anyways.

Anonymous said...

Come on people ...I doubt they are serious! Peta encourages being Vegan and they obviously don't eat ANY dairy as it is. i think they are just trying to make a point . since I'm sure the thought of using breast milk for ice cream makes almost everyone's stomach turn.

There are certainly problems with the dairy industry--cows with mastitis being pumped (and we're drinking their infected milk), cows pumped full of hormomes (estrogen) so their udders are swollen and hanging on the ground, etc. As a nursing mother who has experienced clogged milk ducts and painful engorgement, I can half-jokingly say I can sympathize with diary cows. BUT, human breast milk is for babies, and I agree if we're going to harvest it, we should give it to preemies and other infants in-need. America's dairy problem is that dairy is completely unnecessary for human nutrition (in fact, our bodies aren't designed to tolerate it after weaning, hence lactose intolerance; if you aren't lactose intolerant, that's a genetic abnormality that's developed from years of human dairy consumption). But i can say like the next person, I love my dairy...just not made from human milk. Maybe let's focus on buying organic dairy from free-range cows that aren't pumped full of estrogen? That will also help keep our daughters from early puberty related to all the hormones!

Before posting a comment about saving the cows and stopping milking them, do some research in to what would happen 1) to the health of those cows that we stopped milking, and 2) our human food supplies and prices of. Unbelievable!

Anonymous said...

yea,and i bet all these peta people give there babies formula, made from cows milk. God gave us the cows for meat and milk. and breast milk for our babies. peta, get real and go save our own species from abortion.

Anonymous said...

That is just disgusting. PETA has gone waaayyy out of line!

Anonymous said...

i wonder if anyone has ever told them that milking a cow is good for them? cows do not have to have a calf to produce milk, and it is uncomfortable, if not outright painful for them not to be milked. similar to when a nursing human has engorged breasts [personal experience..it hurts]theres nothing wrong with milking a cow. not to mention a human is more important than a damn cow. people eat them anyway.

Anonymous said...

I support PETA and the humane treatment of aminals. I am also in favor of having options, who knows maybe there is someone out there who would like to have human breast milk ice cream or breast milk as an option for other than ice cream. I would have liked to breastfeed my infant but was unable to do so because of a medication I take. I would have considered purchasing breastmilk if it was a safe option. What really disturbs me is that PETA ruins it's reputation and losses the support of many people by being so extreme and insane. They should push for the humane treatment of cows without equating calves to human infants.

Anonymous said...

Seriously, are you kidding me. This is absolutely ridiculous. So PETA's theory is use human milk to free the animals from producing milk for humans when it was meant for a baby cow. Does it make sense to use human mothers in their place when human mothers milk is meant for their baby? God made animals for us to use their milk and their meat. I believe in the ethical treatment of animals but come on this is ridiculous instead of milk cows we'll have milk humans?

Anonymous said...

PETA is crazy! Leave breast milk for human babies--they are the ones who need it. The cows and calves will be just fine.
And besides, not all breast milk is equal. I mean some moms eat healthily and others all junk food. Imagine the expense of acquiring and screening all the breast milk. PETA GETA life!

Anonymous said...

I agree with most posts. I think its ridiculous for someone to have even thought of this. I'm a nursing stay at home mom, so I have no need to pump. However, my friend works therefore she does pump. Her production is up so much she has over 500 extra bags of breastmilk frozen. She is going to move soon and was curious what she should do with the extra (nobody wants to waste all that milk by throwing it away, it took alot of work). She will be donating to a company that will get it ready for a hospital, so babies who came into this world early may have a healthier, fighting chance.

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure how I would feel about actually consuming my own breast milk let alone someone elses. There are so many things to consider. One issue I can think of is what's in the breast milk. Any nursing mother will tell you that you need to watch what you eat because everything that you consume (gassy vegetables, milk, spicy things, alcohol, medications etc,) is passed on in your breast milk. The women would have to follow a very strict diet to make this even plausible. I mean what would ice cream taste like if it was made from milk that was produced from a woman who eats a lot of garlic?

amberjean said...

Peta is ridiculous!!! Don't they realize that some moms eat differently and that effects the quality of their milk. And what is this...overmilking of cows? What do they think would happen to mothers who wanted to make extra money. They would be so engorged and in pain... God created cows and other animals for human consumption!!! The cows will be just fine!! and if mothers do want to pump extra milk for something, donate to a hospital so that it can be used for mothers that can't breastfeed immediately and for the babies that need it due to premature birth and other complications.

Anonymous said...

If we didn't use dairy cows for dairy milk products, those dairy cows would never exist. We wouldn't breed them to just stand around and fart into the ozone while we shovel feed into them would we? So you have to ask yourselves, do we want to take away mediocre jobs from dairy cows who's very existence depends on those jobs? But, if the dairy farms were gone, our air and ground water would be much cleaner. The problem with dairy farm wastes is horrific. Pfffffft.

munchbugmom said...

I won't even try my own breastmilk let alone ice cream made with someone else's!! PETA needs to pull their ignorant heads out of their wazoo's and find a different cause to fight for. Cow's cannot tell us their feelings on the matter. They chew on their vomit, eat hay, poop around the clock and then celebrate the day by laying down for the night in it!!! I don't think they care if we eat a little ice cream made with their milk!!! Leave the breastmilk to the human babies!!! If you want a different kind of "milk" in your ice cream, talk to SOY! I hear he's looking for a job!!!

joanna said...

These people are freaking crazy! How about using any extra breast milk for all the premature babies that need it and can't get it from their mothers. And if there is too much breast milk for them, then all the cancer patients going thru chemotherapy and radiation could benefit from it!Give me a break, putting it in ice cream, that is rediculous!!!

Anonymous said...

Does PETA want nursing mothers locked in stalls!
Women are not animals and shouldn't even be compared to them.

Anonymous said...

Kudos to B&J. PETA must not have researched their suggestion too well since any bloodborne pathogens, such as aids, can be transmitted through breat milk. As a nursing mother, I can't even imagine how long someone would have to be pumping to come up with enough volume to do this. The only way I can deal with the inconvenience and uncomfortabilty of pumping is knowing it's for my child, not for someone to put in freaking ice cream. Give me a break. I wonder if the person or persons from PETA that made the suggestion were male or female. There's food for thought, hook them up to a machine and see how they like it.

Anonymous said...

my wife...she make this cheese. she make it with milk from her teat. LOL!!!

Anonymous said...

That is the most riduculous thing I have ever heard. And I suppose it isn't inhumane to "milk" me - so what is the difference? Go buy soy ice cream if you have a big problem with cow's milk ice cream. You're running out of things to complain about PETA, aren't you?! This is a far stretch.

Rebecca said...

Why is it so weird and appauling to consider ice cream made with human breast milk? So many people eat food made with cow breast milk every day...and they're not even the same species. At least the human mothers wouldn't be pumped full of hormones, steriods and antibiotics to increase production...forcefully impregnated just to have their children stripped from them and slaughtered...and they wouldn't be added to bags of dog food when their milk supply lessens. Thank goodness human mothers have rights.

Anonymous said...

I feel safer with cow's milk. At least their is someone monitoring the cow's diet. With humans, who knows what they are consuming that will end up in the breastmilk (alcohol, medication, etc.).

Anonymous said...

Ben & Jerrys is one of the only ice cream makers committed to NOT using cows treated with Growth hormones, unlike Haagen Daz, Edys or other popular brands. The public should be more concerned about these effects on our children consuming their ice cream and buy more Ben & Jerry's for that reason alone!!! Our family does!

Oh pleazse! I am a breast feeding mother. It takes me 20 minutes at a time to hit the "jackpot" and produce 2 ounces of breast milk if I am so blessed (have eaten perfectly and used herbal suppliments and mothers milk tea, which by the way kills the less expensive pitch) I do this for my baby's health and I cannot fathom anyone paying me enough to take it from my child to make some adult with a snack attack some ice cream. How much milk can a cow produce anyway? I think much more at a time than this.

I just have this picture in my mind of all these women lined up, locked in stalls with pumps attached to their breasts, while they just stand there and look at each other - all day long. Disturbing...

If anyone has EVER been on a dairy farm you know that cows HAVE to be milked very early in the morning or they will suffer from pain! there arent enough calves for that! Cow's milk is great for ADULT humans' nutrition like Vitamin D. HUMAN breastmilk is for HUMAN BABIES!!! There are so many premature babies dying because there is not enough HUMAN BREASTMILK! Get it right PETA! Humans are more important than animals! I used to respect PETA but now I am beginning to lose that respect! I am a nursing mother and trust me, my milk is for MY baby, not the icecream industy. And do you know how hard it is to pump? If you only pump, the milk dries up really fast. Your body knows the difference!

Anonymous said...

I find this idea interesting, but I must say if cow's milk is for their calves isn't a mother's milk for her baby too. And this could lead to mothers becoming pregnant just so they can produce milk for some extra cash, what about those kids.

mom said...

Disgusting! And last time I checked, cows liked being milked! It relieves them and on most of the dairy farms in the world the cows are treated and live better than a lot of the humans in the world. How about focusing on the better treatment of people and let the cows keep living the good life they are used to.
