Authorities say a grandmother was arrested for driving around the parking lot of a Marathon grocery store with her 3-year-old child sitting on the roof of the car.
Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the Publix store Tuesday and arrested a 54-year-old woman after she was driving around with her three-year-old granddaughter on the roof of her car.
The grandmother was released from jail 15 hours later.
The woman said Thursday she would never let anything hurt her granddaughter. She says she was driving at "snail-speed" and holding the child's leg.
Authorities say the woman told police she was giving the child some air and letting her have fun.
She faces charges of child abuse. The child is back with her mother.

Holy crap!! 3 years old! That's ridiculous. That woman must be completely nuts. Like holding onto the childs leg somehow makes it secure.
Are you serious?! That is the age of my daughter! That is crazy! She could have seriously injured her!
The sad part is that chidren are very trusting of the adultrs in their lives and are unawre of the dangers. The adult should face charges and take responsabilty for her actions that child could have been seriosly injured or hurt. Thank God she was not!
Oh that is crazy - when I read the headline I assumed that she had placed the child on the roof and then forgotten she was there - which would have been bad in and of itself - but to have it be intentional - that is crazy!
what was she thinking. there many ways the baby to have fun.next time take the baby on her stollerand run aroundand you will see she will have lots of fun.
Beside the fact that it's incredibly dangerous and irresponsible, HELLO.. it's SUMMER! How hot is the roof of the car??!! Regardless of the location of the incident, it's summer and the heat on the top of a car has to be scalding! Unbelievable!

how insane is she!! I have 4 girls and have lots of fun just walking around with them in the stroller. I think she should see a professional to get help because she is clearly insane.
What the hek is wrong with this lady? She's nuts I think its her age, or something. Maybe she was driven in a horse back in those days, to catch some air and thought it was normal to drive her grandaughter that way! Wierd!!!
The fact that this can only happen in America is true.
Only in America can a person be prosecuted for doing this.
Go to any other country and you'll find people doing this and even worse things and the children are just fine. The problem is that no one can seem to mind their own business. If the child was hurt then I see pressing charges of neglect and abuse, but no one was hurt.
What will happen when YOU think you are doing something inocuous and you get arrested for it. You will probably say something like "I wasn't hurting the child, it was only for fun", or something like that.
Then find that people on a comment blog post things like you're crazy and should be put in jail.
Children do dangerous things everyday and nothing terrible happens to them.
That's how they learn what is and isn't dangerous. If you don't let them learn then you'll end up with a bunch dependents always needing mommy.

All I can say is wow. I can't believe she actually thought her excuse justified her actions. Her daughter must be super pissed, I would kill my mother if she did something like that. Plus, I would hope to think people know their parents better than that. I am sure her daughter knew what a crazy woman she is before she let her watch her child. And the comment someone else left about "this could only happen in America" , I highly doubt it. Plus there are some other countries who put highly deadly weapons in the hands of children, I suppose that is smart? I hate it when people generalize others like that. There are moronic people all over the globe, Hello!

kezia kudos for being the first one to say this. Children in our society just are not allowed to grow up anymore. Yes children are going to get hurt. Yes children are going to fall down. Yes children are going to break bones. We need to back and whatever this woman did it really is none of our business to be commenting on her mental state.
I totally agree on the last comment about that it really is none of our business on what this woman did. You shouldnt judge others.
children trust us as adults to keep them safe...yes they make mistakes but alot is set by example...as adults we can and will make mistakes but there are mistakes then there is stupidity...I would proudly say that my mistakes as a parent and as an individual would not put a child at such a high risk for injury or death. As for some of the comments about America...I'm guessing that they are regretting it now...I am proud to be Canadian and from America. My prayers go out to those children in other countries who don't have adults in there life to keep them safe and to teach them how to keep themselves safe.
