Smoking Marijuana During Pregnancy Alters Newborn Behavior

The Journal of Pediatrics has published a new study which brings to light another troubling consequence of smoking marijuana, particularly during pregnancy. From Reuters Health (scroll down for the story, right side).

"Barros and her team looked at 561 infants born to adolescent mothers. Twenty-six of them had been exposed to marijuana, as revealed by tests on the mother's hair and the infant's stool. Just one of the mothers had reported smoking pot while pregnant.

Trained examiners, who did not know a child's marijuana exposure status, tested the neurobehavioral responses of all infants. On average, marijuana-exposed infants scored differently on measures of arousal, regulation and excitability compared to the non-exposed infants...

..Infants exposed to marijuana in the womb show subtle behavioral changes in their first days of life, researchers from Brazil report.

These newborns were more irritable than non-exposed infants, less responsive, and more difficult to calm, Dr. Marina Carvalho de Moraes Barros and colleagues from the Federal University of Sao Paulo and colleagues report. They also cried more, startled more easily, and were more jittery. Such changes, Barros and her team say, have the potential to interfere with mother-child bonding.

Here's the key point: "It is necessary to counter the misconception that marijuana is a 'benign drug' and to educate women regarding the risks and possible consequences related to its use during pregnancy," Barros and colleagues conclude."

Jennifer Garner Went On Diet To Lose Post-Pregnancy Weight

You may wonder how so many female celebrities suddenly look fabulous post-pregnancy, but despite what you may think, the baby weight doesn't magically come off. Jennifer Garner admits she battled to lose her post-baby weight for the Golden Globes. The actress - who gave birth to daughter Violet last year - says she struggled to fit into the white beaded gown she wore to the awards ceremony on Monday. She revealed, "Losing the baby weight took me a long, long time. I just wasn't that motivated. I wanted to play with Violet. To slow down and go at her pace has been such a gift. Then I got on the treadmill, stopped stuffing my face and lost the weight. I cut out croissants, bagels and muffins - all the good stuff. And went back to having a salad once a day and protein." Jennifer - who is married to Ben Affleck- says she finds it difficult to go anywhere without Violet but insists Ben is a good father. The 34-year-old said, "He does a good job. I mean, OK, maybe I wrote out what he was supposed to make for her to eat today while I was gone. But that's just me being paranoid. He's great - he can do it." She added, There's nothing more emotional than seeing your partner - the man you love - with your baby at any time, the first time, the second, yesterday, today. There's nothing more beautiful." Donate Your Breast Milk

What do you think about donating your breast milk if you have extra? Would you do it to help the Mothers who don't? It sounds like a great idea... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Do you, for one reason or another, have more breast milk than your baby needs? Great. Donate it to babies who aren't so lucky. From Time:
The [International Breast Milk] Project was started by... Jill Youse, who discovered she was overproducing breast milk after giving birth to her daughter Estella last July. She had more milk in her first month of nursing than she would ever need."I used to joke that I had enough breast milk to feed a continent," says Youse, 29. "I had a ton of it and I didn't know what to do." She and her husband Jeremy, a resident at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, knew the nutritional value of breast milk and Youse felt an emotional connection to it as well. She didn't want to dispose of it. So with her freezer filled to capacity, she went online to find uses for the extra milk. Breast millk can be kept frozen for several months, even longer in a subzero freezer.
Jill ended up starting the International Breast Milk Project, which sends tested and pasteurized breast milk to orphanages in Africa. So if you've got some extra milk, why not send it? —MEGHANN MARCO Source

Oops! Is Britney pregnant again?

Oops, did she do it again?

Britney Spears’s friends believe that the baby-popping singer may be pregnant again, according to In Touch Weekly.

The friends’ concern may help to explain why Spears seems not to have lost any of her pregnancy weight and why she has been getting sick lately. In one widely circulated photo, Spears was shown throwing up peanut butter and reports said she had been drinking, but according to ITW, Spears has been skipping the booze. “Her dancers were indulging in Malibu rum and pineapple drinks and taking shots of vodka,” a witness to a January 14 party at a Las Vegas casino told the mag. “But Britney drank bottled water.” Spears gave birth to her second child only four months ago — but friends point out that she got pregnant for the second time only three months after having her first child.

“I’ve seen her during the last two pregnancies and she has the same look now,” a “pal who sees Britney every week” told the mag. “She’s heavier, but that’s not it. It’s the sparkle in her eye. She always gets that sparkle when she’s pregnant, like she’s relaxed and happy.”

Spears’s rep didn’t return the Scoop’s calls for comment.
