With all the media surrounding Britney Spears lately, she has been a topic of conversation with my co-workers and I. During our breaks, of course! One of my co-workers asked if she breast fed Sean Preston. I didn't know. But that brings up the question, can you breastfeed with implants?
I know that their are some people who disagree that Britney Spears has breast implants, but that's beside the point. I am curious to know if a mother with breast implants could breastfeed her child.
I hear "Yes," sometimes "No," and most of the time, "Depends on the implants." But which is it?
If the implants do affect the breastfeeding process, could it have been a selfish thing for a mother to do?
I know many mother's choose not do breastfeed because of many reasons, but could breast implants just be an egotistical reason for depriving their baby of their mother's milk? "If the baby can't be breastfed at least her boobs look good."
I would really like to know with all sarcasm put aside. Are their any mothers, or anyone who knows someone, who has breastfed with implants?
If it is proven that a mother cannot breast feed with implants, what are your thoughts? Do you agree with the cost of having great looking boobs, while your baby goes formula? Or were you trying on Nursing Bras at 8 months?

Can I Breastfeed If I Have Implants?

I don't know if you can breast feed with implants or not, but I don't think that it's always done on purpose as you seem to have implied. Think about it from another point of view. What if a woman who thought she couldn't have kids or didn't want them got implants. Then a few years later foud out she was pregnant. Is she still selfish? Realistically if you the implants, and its safe to breast feed, then more power to you and good luck on not exploding when you become engourged. As far as Britney Spears being the topic of conversation "Oops I did it again" is the motto for her life.
This is a question that raises more related questions to which I would need to hear a doctor's opinion. Could one even safely go in for implant-removal surgery once you've gotten pregnant? I thought you had to be put under for that. I'd hope a doctor would inform any implant-carrying patient of any risks once you start lactating. Pregnancy and motherhood have been known to be life-changing events that can alter anyone's previous opinions or priorities, including your (pre-baby) body image. And nursing is nature's way to enhance your bust size safely- making implants redundant! Of course once you stop breastfeeding and are dismayed to be left with "rock-in-a-sock" boobs, it's anyone's right to consider implants (again), or a tissue lift, like actress and 4-time mom Patricia Heaton so famously did.
I am a registered nurse working in the cosmetic surgery industry. I also have breast implants, and have had them for several years. I am only seven weeks pregnant, but I do plan on breastfeeding my baby. There is no medical evidence supporting any risks to the mother or baby when breastfeeding with implants.
I had breast plants in 2002.I feb.2005 i had a baby and in march 2006. Both babies were breast fed. one for 3 mths. due to work and one for 9 mths.No probelms what so ever. In fact i was told when i had the implants that it would not be a probelm.I have silicone implants under the breast, complete submuscular placement, incision made under the nipple/areola.I did consult the surgeon before,to check that i would be able to breast feed, as i new i wanted to have children.
I dont think it is selfish. And it hasnt changed anything with regards to breast feeding my children.
I have breast implants and I had the procedure done when I was 22 years old and didnt know whether or not children would be in my future. My doctor doesnt seem to think breastfeeding will be a problem, considering all the leaks I have had since becoming pregnate. That is if I decide I want to breastfeed. I cannot believe how many woman believe it is their right to know whether or not I am planning on doing this. It is a very personal subject!! It is my decision and I will do what I feel is right. I am not selfish because I decided to get them. Its absolutely nobody's business.
YES YES YES the answer is Yes...You can breast feed when you are pregnant...If your breast implant is under the muscle then it has no way of getting through the milk glands and getting into the baby's mouth. If you have your implants over the muscle then you cannot breast feed. I throughly asked my doctor because I knew someday I was going to have kids and I wanted to make sure. Besides you will lose a lot of calories when you breast feed!!
I have breast implants and pregnant by 23 weeks. I got my breasts done two years ago and did not think I would become pregnant so quickly. However, one thing I did ask my surgeon was if I could breastfeed without any harm being done to my baby. His answer was yes. I got my implants under the muscle so the mammary glands were not affected. I do plan on breastfeeding my baby.
I do not have implants, and would never get them as I am already well endowed. According to the pervious comments posted, if you have the right kind of implant you should have no concerns regarding your ability to breast feed. As far as the other question, I think the decision to breastfeed is a very personal one. It should be made on an individual basis. People all have their own oppinions, and some are very quick to impose them on others. I believe that there is no wrong decision in this matter. If you feel you have made a decision that is right for you, the opinions of others become irrelevant. There are pro's and con's to either side, weigh them heavily, consider them at length, and do what makes you happy. That is not selfish.

I also have breast implants and have breast fed both of my children. As an RN, I researched the proceedure first. According to research and my surgeon, brest reduction acutally affects your ability to breast feed becuase mammory glands are damaged. With implants, usually under the muscle, there is little chance of the mammories being affected.
I too am 23 weeks pregnant. I will have had implants for three years when my son's born this summer. When I got them my ability to breastfeed is one of the MAJOR things I researched and asked my doctor about. I am confident that almost all women who plan on breastfeeding their future babies ask about this, just cause we have implants doesn't mean we don't think about the future!
I am now concerned by some of the comments that I have read concerning breastfeeding with implants 'over' the muscle tissue. Am I understanding correctly that it is not possible to breastfeed my baby (due mid-June) at all due to the fact that I have my implants 'over' my muscle?
I think its a very shallow minded person that can judge a womans right to having breast implants.Of course you can breast feed with them they dont interfere with the milk ducts whats so ever, and if they are under the muscle are not even part of the breast.
Only an ignorant person with the incapability to empathise with why a woman would have this done would talk about this with such sarcasim.
I urge any body who is quick to judge to think about the reasons before making hurtful comments.
.Breast cancer
.Breast deformation
.Breasts not growing
.Cellulitus of the breast
.Depression
There are alot of woman who suffer and cannot get on with life, not feeling like a `real woman' it is shoved in our faces in every area of the media and day to day life how important they are .
So NO it is not selfish to want to feel part of society.
Remember you cant love anyone until you love yourself.
My Name is Louise and I have successfully fed a baby with implants. I had two babies, then got implants then had another. I am now 23 wks pregnant and plan to feed. I got implants because of how I felt after feeding my babies and it really boosted my confidence. I know women who won't feed because they don;'t want to ruin the look of their natural breasts. It is not selfish to get implants. Find a good surgeon who will place them behind the milk ducts. I have not lost the effect since feeding with them and urge women to go ahead if they are considering implants with the intention to fall pregnant and feed again. A lactation nurse can help you with any queries at your local hospital also. Louise, Townsville, Australia.
I am 23 weeks and I had silicone breast implants over the muscle a year and a half ago. Not only did my doctor say breast feeding was safe, he encouraged it. For all of those out there that have implants and are worried about their "look" he also said that breast feeding would help fade scars as well. On a side note, please do not judge women with implants. As a teen I always said that I would never get them, but after being diagnosed with breast cancer at 18 years old and undergoing two surgeries I can say I thank God that we live in a time where they are available. Just because you are a mommy, doesn't mean you don't have the right to feel sexy - implants or not.
